of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

the debate. that is a big swing from mid-september when president obama was ahead by eight. that was this afternoon, a short time ago, a poll running in the detroit free press shows the president's lead shrinking to just three points in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party make-up of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on the other hand, says

this week president obama wouldvy strong debate performance that would be erased by a weak jobs number, but it's the opposite. the jobs report is in easing concern about obama's weak debate. nate silver said first day in while obama is is happy for everyone to talk about the economy because the numbers are better than expected with the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8%, a four-year low. exactly where it was when president obama took office. there was only a net gain of 114,000 jobs created last month. too low for sustained unemployment reduction. so something for both sides to like. the president has to be thrilled about this jobs numbers, though. it's a game changer unless it's not. the president is the out on the trail pushing it. >> as a nation we are moving forward again. we're moving forward. more people are getting jobs. now, every month reminds us that we've still got too many of our friends and neighbors looking for work. today's news certainly is not an excuse to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn

, and ironically, if you repeal obama care, and i have become fond of this term, obama care, if you repeal it, what happens is, those seniors right away are going to be paying $600 more in prescription care. they're now going to be having to pay co-pays for basic checkups that can keep them healthier, and the primary beneficiary of that repeal are insurance companies that are estimated to gain billions of dollars back when they aren't making seniors any healthier. and i don't think that's the right approach when it comes to making sure that medicare is stronger over the long-term. >> we'll talk about, specifically about health care in a moment. but do you support the voucher system, governor? >> what i support is no change for current retirees is and near-retirees to medicare. and the president supports taking $716 billion out of that program. >> what about the vouchers? >> that's number one. >> all right. >> number two is for people coming along that are young. what i'd do to make sure that we can keep medicare in place for them is to allow them either to choose the current medicare program or a p

declared mitt romney the winner. he was. he seemed engaged, forceful, punchy. obama seemed passive, detached, and glum. but what's more significant than how romney said things is what he said. romney repeatedly insisted he was not advocating a big tax cut. in fact, he declared unequivocally that he would not cut taxes at all if they added to the deficit at all. now, as "the washington post" reporter checks out, for two years romney has been campaigning on a tax cut that would cost around $5 trillion over ten years. romney said he would eliminate deductions and cut spending to pay for it. he never offers details. he did say he would cut funding for public broadcasting which was 0.01% of federal spending in 2012. medicaid was 0.13%. romney also spoke in favor of regulations including much of the dodd/frank bill and he repeatedly held up as a model his health care plan in massachusetts which has added center the individual mandate and on which obama care is based. romney's transformation did not happen overnight. the candidate has been reworking his stump speech. in a very smart analy

these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conservative-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conservative-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. not only has it been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actually still here and have been seen in new guinea twice since 1990. see if you don't like the real world, invent your own. you know it is not only the right that does this. this week we got a great left

gap. >> reuters has obama up. >> so how do you read it this morning? >> romney has some momentum from the debate. i think the debate is a more powerful political force in the race than the unemployment numbers that came out. we were all talking about those on friday. but you had more than north of 60 million people watching these two guys on wednesday night and you see some momentum, democrats say the gap has narrowed in some states where obama had a lead. he's getting closer in most of the swing states. up two in rasmussen, down three in gallup. and the question is does this week continue that momentum. the vice president debate in the past has been critical for either accelerating or breaking the momentum one way or the other for the party in power. and we saw dick cheney came through twice for president bush, once in 2000 against joe lieberman when they were continuing the progress bush that in the first debate, second time was in breaking the momentum that john kerry had in 2004. and cheney bested john edwards in 2004, that helped him. so we have to see whether paul ryan, who is v

between president barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15 minute segments, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered discussion suggestions. i made the final selections. for the record they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government and governing. with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics and choices. both candidates will also have two minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain slinlt. no cheers, applause, boos, hisss among other noisy distracting things so we may all concentrate on what the candidates have to say. there is a noise exception right now

. republicans were thrilled with his performance. democrats were not so thrilled with president obama's performance. the question is going to be has mitt romney been able in a race where he's been clearly behind the president to hurt him enough and sustain that momentum over the next three weeks. that's what's really critical. there have been strong debates, john kerry had a strong debate against george w. bush in 2004. but he wasn't able to translate that into lasting benefit. that's the best of the next three weeks, to see whether romney can keep it going or whether president obama comes out with a higher level of aggression, higher level of energy in the next debate and stop the momentum that romney accumulated last night. >> okay. yeah, i had so many different thoughts, john, as we watched the whole thing. i remember that a lot of republicans were supporting newt gingrich because just for this moment, they wanted -- they thought newt was such a great debater, they wanted to see someone like newt talk to president obama about his policies and about the last four years. and they tho

. >> i was waiting for the obama campaign to put out a video something like this after the debate. i'm glad someone took the initiative to do it. i think the reason he's waited so long is frankly he's been terrified of his own base. it's shocking to see how long and how far he's played to the base and i think finally they saw that they were going to lose. their ideas and the strategies that mitt romney was saying were not going over well, and because of that he sort of got permission to move to the center. it will be interesting to see how long they're able to stay quiet and comfortable with the mitt romney who's not cutting taxes for the top 1%, with the mitt romney who now loves teachers. it's going to be interesting to see how long they can tolerate that. >> the right wing crazies can take a breath until november 2nd. >> the key from my standpoint why they've let him do this, it is not backed up by any policy proposals. think of all the republicans that run to the middle. he made an effort in the policies he proposed. education -- >> his choice on how to compete with al gore was t
